Construction Industry Accountants

CIS specialists for contractors and subcontractors. We handle CIS returns, tax refunds, gross payment status, and VAT reverse charge so you can focus on the job site.

Why Choose Construction Specialist Accountants?

Construction accounting requires specialist knowledge that general accountants often lack. From CIS verification and monthly returns to VAT reverse charge rules and gross payment status applications, the construction sector has unique compliance requirements.

K&R Accountants has worked with construction clients since 2014. We understand the cash flow pressures of project-based work, the complexity of labour-only versus supply-and-fix contracts, and the documentation needed to support CIS refund claims.

Whether you are a sole trader tradesperson, a limited company contractor, or a main contractor managing multiple subcontractors, we have the expertise to keep you compliant and tax-efficient.

Construction Accounting FAQs

What is the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)?

CIS is a tax deduction system for the construction sector. Contractors must deduct 20% (or 30% for unregistered subcontractors) from payments to subcontractors and pass it to HMRC. These deductions count as advance payments towards the subcontractor's tax liability. We handle all CIS compliance for both contractors and subcontractors.

How do I get a CIS tax refund?

If you are a subcontractor and have had CIS deductions taken from your payments, you can reclaim any overpaid tax through your Self Assessment return (sole traders) or offset it against PAYE/NI liabilities (limited companies). We ensure all your allowable expenses are claimed to maximise your refund.

What is gross payment status and how do I qualify?

Gross payment status allows subcontractors to receive payments without CIS deductions. To qualify, you must have a turnover of at least £30,000 (excluding materials and VAT), submit all tax returns on time, and pay all tax liabilities promptly. We can assess your eligibility and handle the application.

How does VAT reverse charge work in construction?

The domestic reverse charge for construction services means the customer (rather than the supplier) accounts for VAT on specified construction services. This applies to most B2B construction work but not to end users. We ensure your VAT returns correctly apply reverse charge rules.

Do you work with both contractors and subcontractors?

Yes. For contractors, we handle subcontractor verification, monthly CIS return submissions, and payment statement preparation. For subcontractors, we manage Self Assessment or corporation tax returns, expense claims, and CIS tax refunds.

What construction expenses can I claim?

Allowable expenses include tools and equipment, work clothing and PPE, vehicle costs for site travel, materials, subcontractor payments, insurance, training, and home office costs if you do admin work from home. We ensure you claim everything legitimately available.
